Remix: 1

Remix: 2

I was inspired to create this photograph after I finished my video. This piece shows the process of existence turning into nothingness. In this particular image the model appears to be turning into smoke, as if her existence is being taken away from her. Thus the theme of ‘fragility of existence’ is reiterated through this piece. Her existence in morphing into something as translucent and insignificant and as smoke.

(To set the mood for this piece I juxtaposed a number of skulls to the background which symbolizes massacre and death. I used blending options in photoshop to create this effect, so that the dark imagery was subtle and so that it did not interfere with the rest of the photograph. )

Remix: 3

As mentioned in the video one atomic bomb can end existence. The photograph portrays a hand that has ‘created’ a nuclear weapon. The ‘smoke’ is in the shape of a mushroom cloud which alludes to the bombings that took place in Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 during the Second World War.

Conversely in the other photograph that same hand is ‘turning into smoke.’ It is ironic that we humans are the creators of the nuclear technology that can extinguish our own existence. The same hand that created the ‘weapon’ is burning out. Thus I expressed the paradoxical effect of nuclear technology on human existence, through these two pieces.

Nuit Blanche

The projection that stood out to me at Nuit Blanche was a rotating car positioned at the middle of the road. A patterned design was carved on the body of the car, which can be observed in the image. The light source was located inside the car which allowed the projections to occur. ‘Spots’ of light were projected on the surrounding buildings, which added an ethereal feel to the work. The rotations of the car caused the light projection to spread and circulate around the buildings due to its movement. The element of motion is aptly used in this particular piece. The word ‘distribution’ comes to mind when I think about this piece. The source or medium of proliferation is the light contained within the car which projects onto a larger area once the rotation begins.

One possible interpretation of the piece would be that it is based on the concept of communication, mass communication. The piece can be used as a demonstration of information spreading from a smaller source to a much larger one. This sort of ‘set-up’ is definitely analogous to the proliferation of news to the public from a smaller source.

Overall the piece was interesting to look at because the projection was spread out across numerous buildings. It was definitely ‘eye-catching’ and appealing to me. This artwork was definitely innovative and fascinating at first sight.

I want to work with themes associated with nuclear warfare, weapons of mass destruction and military technology for my remix project. I am not certain which topic I will focus on heavily, but I definitely want to look at the negative impacts of nuclear warfare. A few years ago I visited the ‘Hiroshima Peace Memorial’ and I was saddened by what I saw. It was depressing to observe the remnants of human existence; remnants of human lives. Through the remix project I want to portray the deleterious effects of nuclear technology, and inform viewers about it. I will do this by creating an informative video about nuclear technology and allude to the bombings that took place in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. I am planning to create the video in an artistic way, so that it is not entirely historical. I found some video footage of the Hiroshima bombings, which I listed below:

I was also inspired by the way this particular video was made. It only uses still photographs. (There are 3 parts to the video)

For the other two pieces of the ‘Remix’ assignment I will focus on nuclear technology and existence. I will look at microcosmic elements of nature and then ‘make them explode’ into a bigger macrocosm, demonstrating how powerful nuclear technology is. My plans for these two pieces are tentative at the moment. Hopefully I will be able to finalize them once I begin working.
